AAA Gives Pre-Travel Tips for Memorial Day Weekend

OKLAHOMA CITY -- With preparation to rescue more than 3,500 motorists over Memorial Day Weekend, AAA offers six pre-travel tips to Oklahomans.

Check the air filter—every six months or 7,500 miles, hold a 100-watt light bulb to the filter. If the light is blocked by most of the filter, replace it.

Check windshield wiper fluid—Check the fluid levels monthly to avoid rain, insects, grime and other debris build up on the window shield. Test the washer spray nozzles before hitting the road.

Check tire pressure—Traveling with the correct tire pressure will make tires last longer and maximize the vehicle's fuel economy. Check the pressure monthly when the tires are cold. Inflate the tires to the vehicle manufacturer's recommended settings—this can be found on a sticker in the driver's door jab or in the owner's manual.

Check tire tread depth—Worn tires are more likely to hydroplane on wet pavement. Check the tread depth by inserting an upside down quarter into a tire grove with Washington's head facing outward. The tread should cover part of Washington's head. If any of the area above Washington's head is visible, it's time for new tires. Check the tread at several points around the tire.

Check the battery— Check that the battery cables are securely attached to the terminals. Clean the terminals if there are signs of corrosion. In order to properly clean—disconnect the cables to clean the areas where their ends contact the battery terminals. Car batteries are expected to have a three to five year service life. If it is nearing the end of its lifecycle, have your battery tested.

Check the windshield wiper blades—Check the blades at every oil change or if they are failing to clean the glass in a single swipe. The life of a rubber insert is around 12 months. Streaking and chattering are clues that the rubber is breaking down.
