Amy's Blog: A School for Young Women Shining Light in Darkness

It is 6:29 a.m. local time. I'm sitting outside our hotel after doing a live shot (hope it came off clearer than yesterday) getting ready to head to breakfast. I've gotten my first, somewhat, full night of sleep. The 8 hour time difference and very long days have taken it's toll, but I'm happy to report we are all doing well and are staying safe.

Yesterday we started out at 10 a.m. after leaving our hotel in Kampala. We made a stop at a local store and stocked up on a few things then made our way to Cornerstone school for young women. It was an emotional sight pulling up to the school, seeing all the girls singing and cheering. They said they have never had visitors of this magnitude visit their school and they were overjoyed.

From the minute we stepped off the bus we were greeted with hugs and affection. The girl's sang for us and the director told us about the great things going on at the school. The young women who enter are shy and timid, but when they leave they are confident and full of pride, ready to go on to college and start a career.

It is just one of the many great things we see going on in Uganda, great things that Oklahoma doctors and volunteers contribute to both physically and financially.

Today we are going to head to St. Monica's school. It's a school for young girls who were stripped from their homes or abandoned by the local Lord's Resistance Army (a rebel group that takes young children from their homes and forces them to fight in their army.) They're often brutalized by their captures. The school is the only place that gives them hope for a future. We met with Sister Rosemary last night. She is the woman who runs the school, incredible in every way and has such a heavy heart for helping these women. I'm looking forward to visiting with her more today and meeting some of the young girls. It should be a really great day.

I'm going to head off to breakfast. I saw Roy Williams and Bill Horn (Roy, Tommie, Mark & Adrian's agent) loading up their plates. I better scoot if I want to get anything (they are really big guys!) Talk to you soon.
