Man Charged With Driving Drunk and Killing 5-Year-Old Has Extensive Drug Past

The man charged with killing a 5-year-old in Oklahoma City in a drunken driving crash has an extensive drug history, according to court documents.

OKLAHOMA CITY -- The man charged with killing a 5-year-old in Oklahoma City in a drunken driving crash has an extensive drug history, according to court documents.

James David Opp, 60, is charged with first-degree manslaughter, causing an accident resulting in bodily injury while driving under the influence, causing an accident while driving a vehicle without a valid driver's license and driving without insurance.

Oklahoma City police said Opp slammed his truck into the back of a car sitting at a red light at the Interstate 240 Service Road and Western Avenue in southwest Oklahoma City on February 26. The collision forced the car into the intersection causing it to hit another truck that was turning left. Opp then crashed into a utility pole.

The accident killed 5-year-old Adam Stutts and injured 3-year-old Avery Stutts. Avery is now in the Children's Center Hospital in Bethany.

Opp admitted to drinking Moonshine and taking Xanax, court records showed. The report also indicated Opp had blood-shot eyes; there was an open can of beer and a smell of alcohol on his breath.

Court records dating back to 2006 showed he also admitted to a lengthy drug history. The report showed he has been drunk more than 1,000 times in his life and almost drank himself to death. He also smoked Marijuana more than 1,000 times, used methamphetamine, hallucinogens, opium, pain killers, barbiturates and tranquilizers more than 1,000 times in his life and cocaine more than 500 times.

Opp has completed at least three different inpatient substance abuse programs through the VA. He related that he came back a Heroin addict after he finished his tour in Vietnam where he was shot three times during his tour of duty.

Opp is behind bars in the Oklahoma County jail. Opp's attorney, Irven Box, said he is still evaluating the case at this time.
