NOBLE, Oklahoma -- It's Tobacco Free Week in Oklahoma, and in Noble, some high school students are helping make their town an example to others.
It's SWAT--Students Working Against Tobacco--at Noble High School and they carry an anti-smoking message.
"Like, today, right now we are doing an outline of the 16 people today who have died in Oklahoma today," Noble High School sophomore Rashelle Wyatt said.
The students also put their message on posters around school.
"It represents all the facts about how tobacco is bad, and it shows some of the side effects of tobacco, that it can kill someone," Noble High School freshman Colton Clock said.
In Noble smoking is already banned in public buildings and public parks. But the students wanted more.
Last Monday night, those SWAT students came before the Noble City Council to ask that the existing ban on smoking in public areas be expanded to include smokeless tobacco also. The Council--unanimously--agreed.
As a result Noble may be the first community in the state to ban all tobacco use in public spaces.
"This was not something the council came up with, this was a student-driven idea," said Noble Mayor Gary Hayes. "Once they passed it we were all excited and happy that we actually got this, which we actually passed it."
SWAT would like to chalk up another victory, making all of Oklahoma tobacco-free someday.
