OKLAHOMA CITY -- As the temperatures drop, the danger that comes with trying to stay warm starts to rise.

Every year, a number of house fires are sparked from people using open flames, candles, fireplaces or space heaters to keep warm.

But there is also danger from gas generated fires mainly in furnaces. If the furnaces are not working properly, they can lead to carbon monoxide poisoning which can also be fatal.

“You need to make sure your furnace is properly maintained every single year. Make sure that the heat exchanger is scoped, the gas pressure is adjusted, flamed sensor is cleaned, make sure all the parts are in perfect working order,” said Cody Scruggs with Air Comfort Solutions.

Experts also recommend getting a carbon monoxide detector in addition to a smoke detector. You can still get a smoke detector at you local fire department for free, but you will have to purchase your own carbon monoxide detector. They cost about $30.
