HOLLIS, Oklahoma -- The water supply in Hollis is contaminated by fecal coliform, or E. coli, and city officials are cautioning folks not to drink it.
Because of high levels of nitrate in the water, residents should not try to boil the water to clean it. Instead, they should use bottled water for drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, washing dishes, and food preparation until further notice.
The city is "increasing chlorination, flushing system, increasing sampling, and inspecting lines,"
The city will inform residents when tests show no bacteria and when they no longer need to use an alternate water source.
For more information, residents may contact the Hollis City Office at (580) 688-9245.
General guidelines on ways to lessen the risk of infection by microbes are available from the EPA Safe Drinking Water Hotline at (800) 426-4791.
