Tombstone Thrower Headed To Boot Camp

PRYOR, OK -- A 21-year-old Locust Grove man accused of throwing part of a tombstone over the Cherokee Turnpike overpass will head to a boot camp for young offenders.

Jeremy McGirt pleaded guilty to throwing or dropping objects onto moving vehicles, a felony, and will enter Oklahoma's Regimented Inmate Discipline program.

A Mayes County judge will review his case in January, and he will be formally sentenced.

The 38-pound concrete tombstone vase crashed into the windshield of a tractor-trailer, nearly killing the driver last June.

Gerald Webb of Porum was in a coma for several days. When he woke up, he had severe damage to his nerves and muscles in his arm.

"I don't have no use," Webb said last summer. "I can't pick it up real good. I can pick it up, but it's real hard. I can't use it or nothing like that. I can't turn it over or grasp nothing. I ain't got no strength in it."

In a telephone interview Saturday, Webb said his physical therapy is going well and he doesn't have as much pain but still can't use the arm.
