Homeless Alliance Focuses On Communication During Severe Weather Season

Communication is necessary when severe weather strikes. This week shelter agencies in the metro had to plan for storms.

The Homeless Alliance’s case managers were busy this week making sure people had places to go. They said it takes more than one agency to protect a vulnerable population. 

The winds began to pick up and the sky began to darken, illustrating a sign of what lies ahead – and a warning to seek shelter. Organizations like the Homeless Alliance ensure people who live outside have somewhere to go when the weather takes an Oklahoma turn. Chief Communications Officer Taylor Self said teamwork is essential. 

“Everybody works together,” Self said. “Giving people enough time to kinda make their overnight shelter choices early -- connecting with our other partners in the area.” 

On California Ave in OKC, the City Rescue Mission is one of several organizations ready to help people escape Mother Nature’s elements. CEO Erin Goodin said their doors are always open. 

“Of course, we’re going to open our doors to anybody that’s seeking shelter,” Goodin said. “We actually kinda rearranged some of our staffing schedules so we have plenty of staff in the building during the evening.” 

Organizations with a mission of hope remind people there’s always a place where they are welcome and safe.  

“Making sure that they’re safe and they’re not scared; they’re comforted and have everything that they need,” Goodin said. “We’re gonna be there for them no matter what.” 

The Homeless Alliance said their outreach teams are out in the community every day keeping unsheltered people weather aware.
