STILLWATER, Oklahoma -- Members of the Oklahoma State University community are concerned over the increasing number of students who admit they know very little about one of the darkest days on campus.

When 10 members of the OSU basketball family died in a plane crash in 2001, the community vowed they'd never forget. Seven years later, keeping the promise is proving to be quite a task.

For two years in a row, hundreds have gathered at Oklahoma State University for the "Remember the 10 Run," an event that pays tribute to the men who died in a small plane crash in Colorado.

Among those on board were NEWS 9 Sports Director Bill Teegins and Will Hancock, OSU media relations coordinator, father and husband.

"Well, I found it to be a great way to remember not only my husband, but the nine other guys who died with him," said OSU Assistant Soccer Coach Karen Hancock.

Karen Hancock, now an assistant soccer coach at OSU, said this year's race is necessary to help keep her husband's memory alive.

Lately she's noticed more and more people are forgetting what happened in this snowy Colorado field.

"I think when they come here, students today, there's a lot of people who don't know there was a crash in 2001 that took the lives of 10 guys who were working with the basketball program," Hancock said.

Dr. Suzanne Burks, of the University's Counseling Services, said there's a reason the students are forgetting.

"The students who are on campus today were in the sixth and seventh grade when that plane crash," Dr. Burks said. "For a lot of them, especially coming from out of state, they don't even know that happened."

Coach Hancock said at the time of the crash, the students were so young, they likely didn't pay attention to the bigger world around them.

Fans, faculty and family members are hosting another Remember the 10 Run in Stillwater.

Not only does it provide financial support for University Counseling Services, but it helps the rest of the campus and community keep the legacy of the "The 10" alive.

Organizers said they've already had double the amount of early registrations this year for the upcoming Remember the 10.

Register to run in the Remember the 10 Run and honor those who lost their lives in the 2001 plane crash.
