Voter registration deadline nears

OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahomans must register to vote by Friday to cast a ballot in November.

People registered Wednesday at the Oklahoma County Election Board. Some had reasons why they want to vote, but regardless of political party, no one appears happy with the current state of the country.

Inside the Oklahoma County Election Board Office registrations to vote aren't the only things beginning to pick up this year; people's emotions are as well.

"This is the greatest country in the world, and people all over the nation are looking at the United States," Oklahoma resident Reta Knight said.

Knight has been frustrated watching her monthly bills rise while she remains on a fixed income. It's her frustration, she said, that has brought her and others to the Oklahoma County Election Office.

Doug Sanderson with the Oklahoma County Election Board Office recognizes the interest in this year's election is high.

"It's healthy for the country, the more people that participate in the process," Sanderson said.

And according to their numbers its possible more Oklahomans could participate. Sanderson said his office has been sending out more absentee ballots than in previous years. He also said in the past month 18,000 Oklahomans have come by his office to register to vote, numbers he hopes will only continue.

"You cannot divorce yourself from the political system, I mean, it's going to impact you whether you like it or not," Sanderson said.

The Oklahoma County Election Board Office will be staying open until midnight on Friday for those wanting to register.
