OKLAHOMA CITY -- Evacuees from Hurricane Gustav began heading home Thursday morning.
Many evacuees said Wednesday they are ready to go back to the Gulf and back to their homes.
"We're trying to run from it and we run into it," evacuee Gregory Lewis said.
The residents traveled to the safety of Oklahoma, but many said they're ready to return.
"I'm frustrated," evacuee Wonner Batiste said. "I've been here since Sunday, Sunday night, and I'm ready to go home."
Evacuee Vickie Sylvester said she's also ready to return.
"As the days pass, I want to go home, but I want to make sure everything is in good conditions for us to go back home," Sylvester said.
Organizers have been in communication with Louisiana and other states to develop a timeline for the residents' return. They talked to emergency officials every hour, but continue to wait for permission to send the evacuees back home.
"We've got to make sure it's done orderly, it's done safely, main priority is safety, is to make sure people are safe, not just on the buses but they have a safe place to return to," Oklahoma Police Sgt. Paco Balderrama said.
Police made 25 arrests, for minor offenses.
