Oklahoma City Mayor Mick Cornett will speak to the general session of the Republican National Convention held at the Xcel Center in St. Paul, Minn. from Sept. 1 through Sept. 4.
Delegates from all 50 states and six districts or territories, totaling over 2,000, will attend to nominate U.S. Senator John McCain as the Republican nominee for President of the United States.
While the exact date and time of Mayor Cornett's address remains unavailable, he is projected to be the first Oklahoma elected official to address the Republican National Convention since 1996 when then-Congressman J.C. Watts Jr. spoke.
"I'm anxious for the opportunity," Cornett said. "Anytime you haven't ever done anything before, there's a little bit of anxiety. This is obviously a high profile event and I want to do well."
While the Mayor is waiting for convention organizers to discuss the theme with him, he has an idea of what he'd like to focus on.
"I'd like it to be about urban issues," Cornett said. "Oklahoma City has a lot of issues and we deal directly with Washington on so many funding opportunities, I would hope it would be something that deals with municipal government and how we interact with the federal government."
The Mayor said whatever his speech's concentration, it'll put Oklahoma City, right where he wants it.
"Just like the NBA gives us a higher profile, just like Devon's new building gives us a higher profile, anytime we can get our name in front of a national audience I think it's good for Oklahoma City," Cornett said.
The Mayor won't be alone; Senator Tom Coburn will also make a speech at the convention.
Mayor Cornett holds the title of President of Republican Mayors and Local Officials (RMLO). He has held the mayoral office since 2004.
