A 16-month-old boy died after family members said they found him unconscious and not breathing in his grandparents' backyard swimming pool on Thursday.

Colby Weske died Friday from drowning, the state Medical Examiner's officer confirmed.

Paramedics and firefighters were called to the home near NW 150 St. and N. Western Ave. where they immediately tried to revive the boy. After he was stabilized, the boy was taken to Integris Baptist Medical Center, authorities said.

"We were in there for 12 minutes working on him and getting him a line so he can breathe," said Lt. David Okrefik with the Oklahoma City Fire Department.

Paramedics said they've seen an increase in these types of calls as pools open for the summer. They urge guardians to keep a close eye on children near water.

"You start having brain damage at around two minutes," EMSA supervisor Tony McCarty said. "After about four to five minutes, unless it's extremely cold water, you can have irreversible brain damage so time is of the essence."

At last check on Thursday night, Emergency Medical Services Authority spokeswoman Lara O'Leary said the boy was still in critical condition.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.
