A known gang member tried to run police over as the officers chased the suspects' car late Monday night, police said.

Police said they were patrolling the Will Rogers Court apartments last night, near Westwood Ave. and SW 15 St. when officers came across Derrick Frazier, 41.  Frazier has been arrested in the past for a number of charges, including assaulting an officer.

Frazier ran and got into a green Mercedes, police said. Police said they ordered Frazier to get out of the car, but instead the suspect drove north on Westwood Alley. A second set of officers were approaching the moving vehicle when Frazier increased his speed and veered the Mercedes toward the approaching officers, police said.

Sgt. Brett Henry, a nine-year veteran of the department, fired one round in the direction of the suspect vehicle while jumping out of the way of the car, a police statement read. Authorities said the suspect continued north before turning east on SW 15 St. and then leaving the vehicle on Heyman Street.

An anonymous tip led police to Frazier, where he was arrested, police said.

"About five minutes ago, we located him standing in front of a house.  He was just trying to blend in, but we did receive some information that this was in fact the suspect," said Sgt. Paco Balderrama with the Oklahoma City Police Department.

Frazier will likely face at least one count of assault and battery with a deadly weapon, police said.

Sgt. Henry was not placed on administrative leave and is back at work Tuesday.
