Enid pauses, remembers the fallen

Its Memorial Day; a day to honor the men and women who serve our country and remember those we lost.

This Memorial Day many of their families joined together in Enid.

Nothing can take away the pain of losing a loved one in combat. This Memorial Day, people in Enid tried to soothe that pain, by paying tribute. 

"It's something we need to remember daily, yes, special occasions like this make more of an emphasis, but it's something we need to remember every day," Twyla Roberts, mother of fallen soldier, said.

One by one, 20 families were recognized. Their sons or daughters were killed while fighting for our country.

"Until my son died, we always went to the lake on Memorial Day," Denice York, mother of fallen soldier, said. "We never thought about the people who've given their lives. It's a different thing now for me."

For the first time, each family saw the place where their loved one's memory lives on.

"That's a different experience to look at; your own son's name on a wall when six months ago you would have never dreamed that could happen," Jon Scripsick, father of fallen soldier, said.

The names etched in stone stand as a testament to all members of the military.

"It's very humbling, honoring and I just think it's wonderful that they do this," Roberts said.

Each name belongs to someone who impacted others, who loved life and who will never be forgotten.

"He was just a young man out of high school that joined," Scripsick said. "He was a happy person that would help anybody."

"He realized that and knew that someone has to step up; he felt like that was part of his job and his duty," Chuck Roberts, father of fallen soldier, said.

The families ask Oklahomans to take a moment and think of those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

"Stop and remember the sacrifices our soldiers have made, not just in the Iraq War, but in all the other wars that's going on, just to remember and not take things for granted," Chuck Roberts said.

The Woodring Wall of Honor is open 24 hours a day to the public. Anyone can visit it at the Municipal Airport in Enid.
