Earth Day events throughout the metro

Today is the 38th anniversary of Earth Day. Started in 1970, Earth Day was formed to raise awareness about the Earth's environment.  

The metro area is taking part in this environmentally conscious day by hosting a number of events. Below is a listing of just some of the events happening today across the city and surrounding areas.  

• INTEGRIS Health hosts "Shred It"

Americans throw away enough office and writing paper annually to build a 12-foot-high wall that stretches from Los Angeles to New York, INTEGRIS claims.

On Tuesday, April 22, all employees of INTEGRIS Baptist Medical Center are invited and encouraged to bring their personal disposable documents to work with them to be shredded free of charge.

A "Shred It" truck will be set up in the east parking lot to collect and destroy the discarded materials. The shredded waste will then be recycled and reused to help preserve our earth. It's a collective effort to help save the environment, one person at a time.

• Rose State Earth Day celebrations
  Who: Rose State College Faculty, Staff and Students
  What: Celebrating Earth Day by cleaning up Raider Creek
  Where: RSC campus lot south of Adair Blvd.
  When: 8:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m.

Students at Rose State were also asked to help clean up Raider Creek in celebration of Earth Day.

• Nichols Hills Earth Day events

Town Hall
6407 Avondale Drive
10:00 A.M. to 7:00 P.M.

Earth Day will give Nichols Hills residents a look at opportunities to become active in making the green community.

Information and exhibits will highlight the needs in areas of recycling, private landscaping, water, alternative fuel/transport, energy, air quality, noise pollution, green construction, and outdoor and recreational hard-scape.

Visitors will be encouraged to give personal opinions through surveys as well as an opportunity to join the Environmental Committee of Nichols Hills. Special attention will be given on ways and places to recycle right now to keep our homes and neighborhoods clean. Exhibits will explain other aspects of the ecology and the environment.

Schools in Nichols Hills and the surrounding area are being invited to exhibit art projects. Free trees and free Energy Star Energy Saving Light Bulbs will be given to those attending the celebration.

• Norman hosts Polar Palooza

Two events today in Norman as part of the national Polar Palooza event.

From 9:30 a.m. - 1:30 p.m., there will be a teacher workshop at K21 Center in OU. 

Tonight at 7 p.m., there is a public event at Sam Noble where polar explorers will be talking about their experiences and how the polar regions are changing due.
