Windy Weather Thursday & Rainfall Summary

The same low pressure system that brought heavy rain and severe weather to Oklahoma on Wednesday and early Thursday is bringing strong winds behind it for much of the state Thursday.  The storm system is exiting to the east, taking the risk for severe weather and flooding with it, but on the back side strong winds are sweeping in from the southwest and west across much of the state. 

Winds will gust up to near 50 mph at times in the Wind Advisory area, which covers the following counties: Harper, Woods, Alfalfa, Grant, Kay, Ellis, Woodward, Major, Garfield, Noble, Roger Mills, Dewey, Custer, Blaine, Kingfisher, Logan, Payne, Beckham, Washita, Caddo, Canadian, Oklahoma, Lincoln, Grady, McClain, Cleveland, Pottawatomie, Seminole, Hughes, Harmon, Greer, Kiowa, Jackson, Tillman, Comanche, Stephens, Garvin, Murray, Pontotoc, Cotton, Jefferson, Carter, Johnston, Love, and Marshall.  This Wind Advisory will remain in effect until 9 p.m. Thursday. 

As of 4 p.m. Thursday, Stillwater had maximum wind gusts up to 56 mph, Purcell and El Reno up to 55 mph, Ninnekah up to 54 mph, Weatherford, Minco and Hollis up to 52 mph, Lawton up to 51 mph, and Spencer up to 50 mph.  Wind gusts will remain this high at times through the rest of the evening. 

Heavy rain from this storm system has caused minor to moderate flooding in many parts of the state.  For details and updates on the flood warnings in effect, click here.  Guthrie in Logan County received the highest measured rainfall from this system, with 5.41" accumulated from Wednesday through Thursday morning.  Bowlegs near Seminole accumulated 5.23" the past two days.  Most parts of Oklahoma City received two to three inches of rainfall.  Will Rogers Wold Airport reported a storm total of 2.73", the Northwest Oklahoma City Mesonet station accumulated 3.16", and the other two Oklahoma City Mesonet stations both recorded 2.8."  News9's rain guage accumulated 2.59" Wednesday through Thursday morning.
