Any fan can tell you Oklahoma football has a storied past and there are plenty of well-known game-time traditions. Some say OU's best kept secret is the Sooner Hotel.

All good things must come to an end, and that's also true for the Sooner Hotel. Come March 2, it will close its doors and be transformed into classrooms and office space.

The hotel's cottages will stay open.

On football weekends, the hotel was always packed with fans. For many, staying at the Sooner Hotel became an annual tradition.

OU Housing Director Bill Henwood explained inside room 200, the Sooner Suite.

"This is the room that has seen many, many recruits, football, basketball, and so on come and go over the years," Henwood said.

One of those recruits from long ago was football legend Uwe von Schamann.

After his playing days were over, Uwe von Schamann and his friends made the hotel their destination of choice.

"We would have a big time here on the weekend, and then after the game, it's like, okay, same time next year," Schamann said.

Sooner Hotel opened its doors in 1962. That same season OU had three All-Americans under Coach Bud Wilkinson. Oklahoma won the conference title also in that year.
