More the 50 fire departments from across the state worked Friday and Saturday to put out what's being called the largest wildfire in Southwest Oklahoma in two years.

It took crews more than 18 hours to contain the fire. It burned more than 4,000 acres in Comanche County and an unknown amount in Caddo County.

Fire Timeline

  • The fire broke out at about 2:30 p.m. Friday in northeast Commanche County, said Chris Kilmer, the county's public information officer.
  • At 4:15 p.m., ten homes had been evacuated, authorities said. Fifteen fire departments were responding to the fire.
  • At 4:30 p.m., the fire was spreading into Caddo County, Kilmer said. Crews from 20 fire departments were responding to the fire and 15 homes had been evacuated. Rural county roads were closed but main highways remained open.
  • At 10 p.m. officials said the fire was partially under control. They called in relief for those who had been battling the fire all day. They worked throughout the night to put out the fire.
