There are lots of gyms to choose from locally, but it definitely can be tough finding one that's best for you unless you know what to look for.

Angie's List provides insight on all sorts of things and provides an informative list to consider when searching for a gym.

First, ask friends and coworkers about the gyms they use. The key is finding one that you feel comfortable at, and that is convenient for you.

Next, tour the gym at the time of day you plan to work out. This way you can see if it is it a peak time for you. You will also see if you will have to wait to use equipment or get into to fitness class you want. In addition, notice how they might deal with the influx of new members.

Assess the gym to see if it has what you are looking for. Take a look at the weight machines, cardio machines, aerobics room and the schedule for group fitness classes. The more a gym has to offer, the more likely you'll be happy as your routine changes and grows to include more variety.

"See if the fitness center has a trainer that may be able to help you, especially if you're just starting on a fitness regime," Angie Hicks of Angie's List said. "Look into classes that you might be interested in taking and check out daycare."

Ask about staffing levels and their qualifications. Inquire how many trainers are on staff, when they are on duty, if they are certified or professionally trained.

Confirm the costs and what they include. Most gyms require a one-time signup/joining fee, and then charge a monthly membership fee. Find out what is included in these fees and if there are extra fees for group fitness classes. Ask about other amenities such as covered parking and lockers.

"If you're at the beginning of a workout regime and you haven't been working out long before that might want to look for a gym that has an option for a shorter term. That way, you're not locked in for a year or two. Make sure you're comparing apples to apples when comparing across gyms," Hicks said.

Selecting a fitness center is just the first step - you have to stick with it. Angie recommends bringing a friend along to help you stay motivated
