The clock is ticking for Oklahomans to file their 2024 taxes, with the deadline set for 11:59 p.m. on Tuesday.
If you still need more time, you can request an extension to file until October 15, but a longtime certified public accountant in Oklahoma City is stressing the importance of avoiding penalties and interest by filing for an extension.
Misconceptions
Joshua Jenson, also known as "JJ the CPA," says he sees a lot of Oklahomans extending because they think it gives them more time to pay.
However, Jenson said it only gives more time to file.
"You're adding insult to injury," said Jenson. "Get that extension filed even if you don't have your numbers to avoid late payments."
Jenson said he wants Oklahomans to write their checks on Tax Day, as April 16 is when penalties and interest begin.
Utilizing Tax Professionals
With many different ways to get taxes filed, Jenson advises using a tax professional as he believes it's easier to overpay than underpay.
"We don't try to fill our own cavities," said Jenson. "Think of a professional to ensure everything is done correctly."
Documents Required For Filing
Tax filers will need income statements such as W-2s, 1099s and other relevant documents.
Deduction records are important to include with things like receipts and records for deductible expenses. Examples are things like mortgage interest, property taxes, charitable contributions and medical expenses.
Lastly, Jenson says taxpayers will need proof of tax credits with documentation for any credits you're claiming, like education or energy-efficient home improvements.
