A Norman mother has been charged with second-degree murder following the death of her son earlier this year, according to court records.

What happened?

In January, a 2-month-old boy from Norman suffering from multiple blunt force injuries was transported to a local hospital.

“As the child arrived there, we received some additional information that the child’s injuries were extensive," Norman Police Department spokesperson Sarah Schettler said. "The child wasn't expected to live.:

Despite lifesaving efforts, the child, suffering from internal injuries and skull fractures, died at the hospital twelve hours later.

Mother claims she left her sons unattended for 3-4 minutes

The child's mother, Kristeny Davis, told investigators she and her two sons, a 2-month-old, and a 4-year-old, were inside their family’s Norman apartment when her younger child became injured.

Davis claimed she stepped away from her children for 3-4 minutes. When she returned, the mother said she found her infant lying in a ball pit.

“Initial reports to investigators were that the child had been flung into a small ball pit, and that’s how the injuries occurred,” Schettler said.

Mother admits to drinking heavily and passing out

Pressed further by investigators, police said Davis admitted to drinking throughout the day. Too intoxicated to drive, police said Davis asked her boyfriend, who was at work, to pick up her 4-year-old son from daycare.

When Davis said she did not hear back from her boyfriend, investigators say Davis admitted to driving to her children’s daycare before returning home with her children.

Norman Police said Davis’s cellphone data revealed she was not active on her phone for the next 90 minutes. Davis admitted she was asleep during that time and had passed out, according to police.

“It’s within that hour and a half that there was no activity on her phone that they believe these injuries occurred and ultimately led to its death,” Schettler said.

According to court filings, Davis told police “I can't do anything but blame myself."

GoFundMe page

Following her son's death, Davis started a GoFundMe page titled "Grieving Parents Need Your Support."

In her post, which generated more than $400, Davis claimed she had to be hospitalized due to her loss and was unable to work.

Arrest

Davis was arrested on Feb. 5 in a parking lot after initially refusing to exit her vehicle.

Davis was with her child's father at the time of the arrest, who can be heard on police bodycam video apologizing for her behavior—and telling police on the scene that Davis was still intoxicated.

Davis remains in custody at the Cleveland County Detention Center and is held on a $1 million bond.
