Discovery Lab is getting ready to turn its Science Lab into a Winter WonderLab.
The theme for the next three months is fire and ice. The lab will have a series of activities and experiments, like Coffee Creamer Fireballs, that focus on heat exchange, phase changes, combustion reactions, and gas laws.
"We are prototyping a lot of experiments on fire and ice," said Director of Education Chip Lindsey. "We are actually having a blast trying some things out and this is one of them."
Coffee Creamer Fireballs use three simple ingredients: coffee creamer for the fuel, fire for the ignition, and a tube to blow into for the oxygen.
Lindsey said, "What we are going to be doing is blowing out a cloud of powder and then that is surrounded by enough oxygen for each particle to catch on fire really quickly."
Experiments like this teach the kids about heat energy in food and how to release it.
"It is really about unleashing the energy that is pent up in food, the food that we eat every day," Lindsey continued saying, "We see calories on the back of the packaging, but we hardly ever think about the heat energy that is a calorie."
Similar principles apply when it comes to ice. "Whether you are freezing something, melting something, catching something on fire, it is really about the energy that is locked into those transitions," Lindsey said.
The fire and ice activities will start on December 3rd and go through the end of February.
Discovery Lab has also opened registration for its Winter Wondercamps on January 2nd, 3rd, and 6th. These single-day camps are for kids Pre-K through 6th grade.
Campers will learn about chemistry, engineering, and coding through hands-on activities. To register a child visit
