Pawnee County is recovering after a small tornado caused significant damage and took one life, according to local authorities.
Pawnee County Sheriff Darrin Varnell reported that the tornado struck two to three travel trailers, flipping them over, and killing at least one person. Authorities have not released details on the fatality, and Varnell said he had no further information to share.
While the full extent of the damage is still being assessed, Varnell noted that the destruction was mostly confined to downed trees, power lines, and a snapped power pole.
The sheriff spoke about the damage and loss of life with News On 6 late on Thursday night.
“Anytime a storm hits, it's tragic,” Varnell said. “They've essentially lost just about everything they own in a matter of seconds.”
The sheriff's office helped put together a large emergency response, with crews from Pawnee, Osage, Payne, and Noble counties assisting in the cleanup effort.
Residents are being advised to avoid the area around the lake, where the majority of the damage occurred, to allow emergency crews to work without being impeded. Varnell also warned drivers to be cautious of utility crews working to restore power.
“Just keep everybody out here and your thoughts tonight as you prepare to go to sleep,” Varnell said.
