Big Brothers Big Sisters of Oklahoma is in the midst of its largest annual fundraising campaign, Bowl for Kids' Sake.
The organization's area director, Michael Stuemky, discussed the importance of the event during a recent appearance on the Coca-Cola Southwest Beverages Porch.
"Bowl for Kids' Sake is our annual fundraiser that's a peer-to-peer fundraiser," Stuemky explained. "Businesses can come in as sponsors, but individuals can also sign up to make teams and support our mission."
Big Brothers Big Sisters is a one-on-one mentorship program that pairs adult volunteers, known as "Bigs," with children, or "Littles," who can benefit from additional support and guidance.
Stuemky noted the program serves children from all backgrounds, including those living in poverty as well as those from more affluent communities.
The Bowl for Kids' Sake event allows teams of 5-6 people to participate in a bowling activity while also fundraising for the organization.
Stuemky said the event is a fun way for the community to get involved and learn more about Big Brothers Big Sisters' work. "People put together teams, and they do a little bit of fundraising that buys them a lane for the night," he said. "They come out, they bowl, they have a good time, they learn about our mission." The Bowl for Kids Sake celebration event is scheduled for Thursday, April 22 from 6-9 p.m. at a local bowling center.
Stuemky encouraged the community to attend and support the organization's efforts to provide mentorship to young people in need. "It's a really nice bowling center, and it's just a fun event," Stuemky said. "It's a great time where you get to mix up people and mingle with people that are from a lot of different types of industries that support us."
