A doctor described the condition of a 7-year-old girl who died as extremely malnourished. Midwest City Police say the girl’s parents now face second-degree murder charges.
Lisa Mitchell, 30, and Anthony Yonko, 37, are accused of murder in the death of their 7-year-old daughter.
On Friday, Midwest City Police went to the apartment complex off East Reno Avenue and Air Depot Roaf, where the family lived, to begin an investigation into the young girl’s death.
According to a probable cause affidavit, the mother told police her daughter was “sick with the flu” and was “not moving.”
Police say the couple brought her to the emergency room where she was pronounced dead. Court documents reveal the girl was “extremely malnourished weighing only 25 pounds.”
Several neighbors say they had no idea the girl was suffering inside the apartment. “It's terrible, we need to have a better system, for these people to stand out,” said Brendan Cummings.
Flowers were placed outside the family’s apartment door, to remember a young life lost, allegedly, at the hands of her parents.
“That’s terrible,” said neighbor Jerry Coover. “I would say the parents are accountable for what happens to the child, I mean they're responsible.”
On Monday, August 5, a judge set a $10 million bond for each parent.
