Shots rang out early Monday morning only feet from officers waiting outside a metro hospital. News 9 had a camera at the hospital for a different shooting scene when the gunshots were fired.
Police were stationed outside Integris Southwest Hospital’s emergency room after being notified a juvenile showed up with shooting injuries. Moments later they heard multiple gunshots from the area of Southwest 42nd Street and Douglas Avenue.
A drone was sent up while officers called for the suspect to come out of the home. A man was seen being handcuffed, but police did not indicate if he was arrested for the shots fired or something else.
Meanwhile, an investigation continued across the street at the hospital. Police were called when a juvenile showed up around 4 a.m. with non-life-threatening gunshot injuries.
“It was a young man who indicated he had been robbed,” said Msgt. Gary Knight, Oklahoma City Police Department. “Somebody tried to take his car.”
The victim told officers he was riding around with the suspect when the suspect pulled a gun on him. The victim claimed the suspect shot him and fled on foot.
“The victim had apparently driven around afterwards for a while calling family members telling them he had been shot,” said Knight. “They were able to meet up with him at a convenience store and then drive him to Southwest Medical Center.”
Police said the victim changed his story several times.
“There’s a whole lot of holes in the story right now that we’re trying to fill in and piece together,” said Knight.
The shooting victim's car was taken to the police evidence barn to search. No one has been arrested for the shooting.
As for the shots fired call near the hospital, police said they never found any evidence of a shooting and cleared the scene.
