Oklahoma City Police Chief Wade Gourley is sharing details about his department's newest initiative to adjust the way officers respond to a mental health crisis.

Gourley said officers now have tablets to connect those experiencing a mental health crisis with a trained counselor, and said this was designed specifically to help those in rural areas get help immediately.

"In a lot of cases if you can just connect someone with a trained counselor," Gourley said. "They can, maybe, prescribe medication or at least get that person on the path to recovery and getting them the help they need."

Gourley also said this will give the department data-driven mental health resources.
