House fires become more common in the winter due to improper use of heating sources, the Oklahoma City Fire Department says.

The Oklahoma City Fire Department said when it comes to space heaters, they need to be at least three feet away from furniture, bedding and curtains.

Turning space heaters off when you leave the room or go to bed is also an important factor in preventing fires, the department said.

OKCFD also says to never use your oven to heat your home, and if you’re loading up the fireplace department said using a metal grate or glass screen in front of the fireplace can prevent embers from flying out.

The department said to always remember to properly install and regularly check smoke alarms, as they greatly increase your chances of surviving a house fire.
