Current Weather in Oklahoma:
A wintry mix is on the way, bringing freezing rain, sleet, and snow to parts of Oklahoma over the next few days. While Monday will be cold and cloudy with light drizzle, temperatures near or below freezing could lead to slick conditions in some areas.
A second, stronger wave of winter weather arrives Tuesday night into Wednesday, bringing heavier precipitation and the potential for icy roads. The OKC Metro will be on the fringe of icy and wet conditions, while northwestern Oklahoma could see accumulating snow.
Here’s what to expect as this system moves in.
Cold and Cloudy Start to the Week
Monday will be a chilly and overcast day, with light drizzle moving into the region.
Highs will only reach the mid to upper 30s, and some areas in northwest Oklahoma may stay below freezing.
This means light freezing drizzle could develop in those areas.
Overnight Freezing Rain and Sleet Possible
Temperatures will drop into the lower 30s tonight, bringing the OKC Metro close to freezing.
Light freezing rain and sleet are possible, with higher chances west and northwest of the city.
In far northwestern Oklahoma, precipitation could transition to snow overnight and into Tuesday morning.
Tuesday: Light Wintry Mix Continues
Temperatures will struggle to climb out of the mid-30s in OKC, while areas northwest will remain below freezing.
Precipitation will be light in the afternoon but could still lead to slick spots on roads.
Heavier Second Wave Arrives Tuesday Night
A more significant round of wintry weather moves in Tuesday night into Wednesday.
This system will bring colder temperatures and heavier precipitation, including the potential for thunderstorms early Wednesday. These storms could lead to higher freezing rain and sleet rates.
The OKC Metro will be right on the edge between icy and wet conditions. Northern and western parts of the Metro are more likely to see freezing rain and sleet, while southern and eastern areas could see mainly rain. The cold air will be shallow, meaning freezing rain and sleet will be the primary precipitation types, with some light snow possible Wednesday afternoon.
Our team of trackers will be out monitoring road conditions and keeping you informed. As the system develops, we will refine the forecast, including the exact timing and precipitation zones. Stay tuned for updates throughout the day.
