10 years ago, a woman was in labor at Norman Regional when it was hit by the EF-5 tornado. She delivered a healthy baby boy and now she's helping other mothers deliver their own miracles.
Shayla Taylor said she was in labor when the tornado hit. Tomorrow, she will be celebrating her son, Braedon Taylor’s birthday.
“At that time I was eight centimeters dilated, so I was close,” Taylor said.
Taylor was the only patient on the second floor of Norman Regional when it took a direct hit ripping the wall off Taylor's operating room.
A few hours later her son was born.
“He's active. He's like a tornado,” Taylor said.
Taylor was able to breathe a sigh of relief, but for many others it turned their lives upside down.
“On his birthday we kind of always sit back and talk about the storm and how blessed we are to be here,” Taylor said.
Taylor said that for her his birthday helped shape her career.
“I either wanted to be a pediatrician, or a baby nurse, so I got the lower end of it,” Taylor said.
Taylor is now a labor and delivery nurse working in the same hospital Braedon was born in.
“It's definitely shaped how I present myself when storms are around because of course when there are storms in the Norman/Moore area you know everybody kind of freaks out,” Taylor said.
She learned that firsthand from her nurses, now coworkers.
“The staff knows what to do in the midst of that situation because I’ve seen it done myself,” Taylor said.
