The opportunity to become a business owner for many is the American dream, and for middle school students at Millwood, that dream starts now.
“Kidvation is a youth nonprofit organization focused on empowering youth, through the power of innovation, entrepreneurship, and leadership,” said Harold Lee Jr., co-founder of Kidvation.
They work with kids ages 8 to 15, and in February, they began working with middle school students at Millwood.
“They’ve been learning about all the facets of entrepreneurship, from branding to marketing, ideation to creation,” said Lee.
Student groups created product ideas for everything from a clothing line, to lip gloss, seasoning mixes, even a self-sorting recycling trash can.
“They can do so much, they are so creative,” said Millwood Middle School Principal Warren Pete.
“What they did today was just so amazing. They truly blew my mind, and I wish I had this growing up,” said Warren.
After months of working to develop their business, students took the stage to present their business idea to judges in front of their peers.
“They had their presentations, they had their products, everything was absolutely phenomenal, and I loved it,” said judge Danielle Adams with Divine Inspirations.
Eighth grader Javer Richards’, who came up with the Hope apparel clothing line, was selected as the winner.
“Chase’s group said they thought I was going to win, but I didn’t know, but I’m really happy I won though,” said Richards.
The new business owner will now have his clothing line available all over the country.
“We are actually going to be an e-commerce website for kids. So, think about Amazon for kids essentially and students get on to that website by going through this program,” said Kidvation Co-Founder Brent Wheelbarger.
Kidvation is looking to expand the program into more schools next school year; they also work with church youth groups. For information about the nonprofit visit their website www.kidvationglobal.com
