An Oklahoma County deputy began his new role as a school resource officer on Monday in honor of his brother, who also served as an SRO at the same school until he died in a car accident in March.
Daniel McCain was the first SRO at Oklahoma Christian School in Edmond before he left in 2017 to serve in Afghanistan. His brother, Jeremy, then became the campus' SRO and was known for his connection with the students, including knowing their names and giving them nicknames.
"It's something that I hope that I can come close to be able to do. But I don't think I'll ever be able to reach those heights," said Dan.
Jeremy continued serving as Oklahoma Christian School's SRO until March 10, when he was critically injured in a car accident. He died 10 days later.
"It's been an emotional rollercoaster," said Dan. "But I'm doing well now, especially between the Oklahoma County Sheriff's Office and Oklahoma Christian School, they have been huge supporters and advocating for any and everything that my family needs."
After Jeremy's death, Dan decided to rejoin the Sheriff's Office so he can return to Oklahoma Christian School as an SRO in memory of his late brother. Dan's official first day back was Monday.
"I feel like a kid on Christmas morning. I am so excited to be here and get to see a lot of the familiar faces, a lot of the new faces," Dan said.
After Jeremy's accident, one of the students at Oklahoma Christian School, Holly Bryan, wrote a book about him called, "Deputy McCain Saves the Day!" On the first page was the following message:
"Dear Deputy McCain, I dedicate this book to you. I wrote this book because I was thinking about you when you were in the hospital. I wanted to let you know how much of a hero you are to all of us at the school."
With that in mind, Dan said he hopes to continue his brother's legacy.
"Building those relationships. Bridging that gap between the youth and law enforcement," said Dan. "Be able to teach and educate them about law enforcement, how we're able to help in every way, and really just trying to touch lives out there."
