Red Cross Seeking Volunteers As Storm Season Arrives

The Red Cross is in need of volunteers to help deliver on services such as responding to emergencies, collecting blood, or providing assistance to the armed services.

The organization said volunteers make up 90% of its workforce, and that when faced with a volunteer shortage, they are unable to provide the necessary manpower when needed.

"Our volunteers are people who love to help their fellow person, want to give back and love to support people in their most desperate times," Red Cross regional communications director Matt Trotter said. "If that describes you then we love to have you as a Red Cross Volunteer." 

Trotter said the nonprofit is sending volunteers out twice as much in the past decade, including last week where volunteers were on the ground in storm-damaged Cole and Shawnee.

Now that we're in storm season, Trotter said it's more important than ever to find volunteers.

The Red Cross' three biggest needs include those who can respond to emergencies near where they live, shelter services workers and health services staff who are licensed healthcare providers.
