Yukon Church Offering Help To The Community Through Food Pantry

About eighteen months ago, Discovery Church at99 E. Main in Yukon realized there was a hunger problem in the community, so they started a food pantry.

“It was something that we really didn’t roll out with some big reveal, we just started small with meeting the need of a few families within our church,” said associate pastor, Joseph Kelly

It didn’t take long to realize the need for food was bigger than they realized.

“We began to do once a month, now we do twice a month,” said Kelly.

For the church, it was important that the pantry be supported by the church.

“We don’t have any kind of red tape or hoops for people to jump through, it’s simply just show up, tell us the need that you have, and we’ll do our best to be able to supply the need with the food that we have on site,” said Kelly.

Ray and Debi Gitzandaner run the pantry for the church.

“We do have a few, not very many, but we have a few that come just about every time,” said Ray Gitzandaner.

And no matter how often families come out, they are always welcomed.

“We don’t ask for any proof of identification or anything like that and if we do have somebody come in and they really didn’t need the food well that’s between them and Jesus,” said Ray Gitzandaner.

No judgment, just sincere help for every circumstance

“You would be amazed at how many families we have served where there are ten or more family members that are living in the home together that are without food,” said Kelly.

“We’re just blessed because we always have enough food to give out, we’ve never run short,” said Debi Gitzandaner.

Every first and third Wednesday at Discovery church, it’s all about one thing.

“For us, we just want to help people, we want to provide food, and so all you have to do is come,” said Kelly.
