The Route 66 Centennial celebration is not until 2026, but work is already underway to prepare for it.
The Route 66 Commission is now giving out grants to help businesses prepare for the celebration. The group is working to improve all 28 miles of Route 66, especially the eastern section of Tulsa.
Samantha Extance, Chair of Tulsa Route 66 Commission, says they want to see the energy and reinvestment there that they have seen in Route 66 Main Street and the Meadow Gold District.
The Commission says it hopes businesses will take advantage of special offers including the Route 66 special event and neon sign grant programs.
“You can still apply for that grant and get a brand new neon sign or restore a vintage one. We are working on a façade grant program that would help historic properties preserve some of the historic elements of their buildings," said Extance.
The Route 66 Commission says it will be in need of people to serve on sub-committees in preparation for the centennial and during the celebrations as well.
