The Oklahoma City Council is on board with constructing a commemorative display featuring two naval vessels bearing the city's name.

The two U.S. Navy vessels, a light cruiser that saw action during World War II and the Vietnam War, and a nuclear submarine commissioned in the 1980s both share Oklahoma City as its namesake.

The memorial would sit on the north shore of the Oklahoma River.

"It just helps us continue that legacy of really being able to honor our veterans," Oklahoma City parks and Recreation director Melinda McMillan-Miller said.

The city said it expects the project to take four to five years to complete.
