Multiple animal shelters in the metro have temporarily closed their doors as many animals battle respiratory illnesses, now identified as Strep Zoo and Canine Flu.
The Oklahoma City Animal Shelter reports over 150 dogs sick, and five dead.
"The issue we had here is we're working with two very different types, one was the Canine Flu, which is a virus, and then we had Strep Zoo, which was a bacterial infection," Jon Gary with OKC Animal Welfare said. "So they're two different types and that's the reason why they're being treated two different ways."
The shelters will stay closed until further notice as they treat the animals.
