Firefighters in Custer County had a busy Tuesday fighting a wildfire. This fire started North of Interstate 40 and West of Weatherford. The fire didn’t take long to burn out of control.
However, firefighters from around Oklahoma came together to put out these flames. The weather was the talk of the town in Weatherford.
“We’ve lived here about 10 years,” said David Cleek, who lives just outside of Weatherford.
Cleek is used to watching flames like this on TV, but Tuesday offered Cleek a front-row seat.
“I’ve seen it on TV before but when you experience it, it’s a whole other deal,” Cleek said.
Cleek’s home was in the path of the fire.
“We were packing up photographs, records,” Cleek said.
Cleek packed every memory he could into the family cars.
“We were ready to go,” he said.
But firefighters’ expertise canceled Mother Nature’s insidious afternoon plans.
“They’re laying their life on the line for all of us,” Cleek said.
Hundreds of feet separated his family from losing everything.
“When it happens to you it really hits home,” Cleek said.
The efforts of these men and women spared this neighborhood.
“I can’t say enough about them,” Cleek said. “I love ‘em. I love every one of ‘em.”
This fire may have hit close to home, but it didn’t hit Cleek’s home.
“It means a lot,” Cleek said. “It means a lot to everybody around here.”
This means there is only one thing left for Cleek to say.
“God bless our firefighters,” Cleek said. “That’s what I’m gonna say. God bless them, every one of them.”
