A few weeks ago, a dog was rescued after being sealed inside a wooden box and left to die. That dog is now with a foster family that’s helping him get on his paws.

A dog once trapped is now free and making himself comfortable in Kayla Wise's home.

“He's quiet, he's low energy, he gets along well with other dogs, he loves people there's some emotional wounds that we will need to work on healing, gaining his trust and stuff to the fullest extent, but overall he's doing great,” Wise said.

Wise said everyday he lives up to his new name.

“His name is Karus and it means beloved, precious, valued and dear,” Wise said.

A powerful name for a dog that's faced many challenges in his life. Wise fosters several animals waiting for their forever home. She recently took in Karus as he recovers from an animaly cruelty case.

“His case is probably the worst that I've had in my home,” Wise said.

Karus was found in a box sealed shut with screws.

“This is the collar he had one. It's like covered in oil and scabs and hair,” Wise said.

Rescuers pried the box open and inside was Karus, covered in scars and small wounds and extremely malnourished. Wise said she heard about Karus's story on social media.

“I was horrified. It was absolutely awful, I cried. All the thoughts running through my mind of what he must've been through, how he was feeling, how long he was in there... the whole thing was horrific.

Despite this tragedy, Karus's loving spirit still shines.

Karus was taken to OKC Animal Welfare, but is now under the care of Mutts Misfits.

“Mutt Misfits will sponsor all of his vet care and if I need dog food or if need toys,” Wise said.

The nonprofit is accepting donations. Karus isn't quite ready for a forever home, but they are also accepting applications for his adoption.

OKC Animal Welfare is looking for the person responsible.
