Respiratory illnesses are on the rise for both humans and pets as veterinarians said they are seeing a spike in canine influenza.

Dr. Mike Jones, a local veterinarian, said dogs and their owners alike should get a flu shot now to stop the spread.

"The holidays are coming up again, get them vaccinated, be prepared," Dr. Jones said.

While most cases are mild, canine influenza is highly contagious, and it's best for pet owners to keep their animals away from other animals until their symptoms go away.
