A tragic chain of events ends with one man in the hospital and a search for a missing dog. Following a fender bender Friday night along NW Expressway, one woman saw her brother and dog get hit by two separate cars.

Courtney Edwards’ brother, Justin, is listed in critical condition at OU Medical Center but expected to recover. As for her dog, Boomer, his story took a turn nobody was expecting.

“It's like a speed race, we've been out here so many times and this whole area is horrible,” said Edwards about the heavy traffic on NW Expressway.

It’s along this busy section of the expressway near MacArthur Blvd. where she experienced heartbreak.

“I saw my dog get hit, I heard my brother get hit,” she said.

On Friday night, someone hit her car from behind. She had her dog with her, a boxer named Boomer, who was frightened, so she called her brother for help.

“Justin was parked here and walked across the street to get Boomer,” Edwards said, pointing out where her brother walked across the roadway.

She said as Justin walked the dog back across the street, Boomer slipped from his collar.

“I guess when the cars got to this point, Boomer got scared, stopped but they didn't see him,” she said.

A car hit Boomer, then seconds later, another car hit Justin.

“I’m freaking out, I'm screaming,” she remembers. “I couldn't see Boomer after he got hit.”

However, she saw her brother, who she says was thrown 30 feet.

“My brother was doing something nice for me and ended up getting hurt and he blames himself for the dog,” she said tearfully. “It's my little brother and he's broken from here [the neck] down and he's worried about the dog.”

The next two days were spent posting flyers and searching for Boomer, even strangers following on social media wanted to help, like Chris Cockrun and his wife.

“We have several dogs ourselves so we kinda figured if we were in the same situation, we would want someone out there helping,” he said.

Then something happened Edwards didn’t expect, a miracle. Sunday night, they found Boomer not far from the area he was hit. A couple at the Boardwalk Apartments found him. Cold and scared, Edwards was finally reunited with her dog. Edwards plans to take him to the vet on Monday but says he appears to be just fine.

Meanwhile, Edwards’ brother will undergo another surgery on Monday. She hopes to take Boomer to visit him real soon. Edwards also wants to warn others to slow down on NW Expressway.
