City leaders in Sand Springs are working to make sure the community is prepared in the event of severe weather.

A general obligation bond passed by voters will help the city pay for updates for storm sirens and the installation of new ones.

Sand Springs City Manager Mike Carter says the new sirens are expected to be louder and more reliable.

The city plans to increase the number of sirens in Sand Springs from 19 to 23.

Carter says the continued maintenance the city was putting into the older sirens called for newer ones to be installed.

In Sand Springs, there are several communities that are out of the siren's reach, currently due to expansion in the community. Carter says those neighborhoods weren’t built when the sirens were installed nearly 20 years ago.

“We are going to cover some of those areas. We’ve had a lot of growth. We’ve had a lot more restaurants and a lot more stores now and so those areas are going to get covered with sirens now so people have proper warning if they are out shopping and dining,” said Carter.

According to Carter, the project wouldn’t be possible without the community’s support.

The city plans to begin the installation of the sirens in the Spring. According to the city, some of the new sirens will be installed in the Oak Ridge Drive and Teal Ridge areas.
