QuikTrip employees teamed up with the Tulsa Area United Way to do something good on Friday.

250 volunteers filled the Salvation Army's Mabee Red Shield Boys and Girls Club, as part of the United Way's Day of Caring.

Volunteer Brittney Burkhalter knows the Boys and Girls Club very well. As a kid, she said she would come here all the time.

"I came to the dances in elementary school. I came to the lock-ins in middle school," Burkhalter said. "So, it feels really good to come back and really be a part of the change."

Burkhalter and other volunteers painted the gym and halls to give it a new fresh look.

She said these centers are vital in giving kids a safe space outside of school.

"It gives space for kids to be able to come and be something greater than themselves," Burkhalter said. "It gives them time to have fun, be a part of cheerleading teams, dance teams, extracurricular activities."

The Day of Caring is a cause Tulsa Area United Way CEO Alison Anthony thinks all Tulsans can get behind.

"Seeing this is just overwhelming and so moving, because you see why Tulsa is one of America's most generous cities," Anthony said.

Burkhalter said she hopes the kids love the new renovations, because for her, it feels great to help a place that was so special to her as a kid.

"It makes me feel proud that I'm a part of a company that wants to give back to a place like this, and it makes me feel good to know that the kids are going to come here and enjoy the changes that we've made," Burkhalter said.

United Way will have its mega day of caring September 16, which is also when the renovations are expected to be finished.
