Just one week into the school year, the Yukon superintendent Jason Simeroth said their school safety measures were put to the test. A man is behind bars after making threats towards students at his alma mater.

Yukon students were the first to hear about the threat and they alerted school officials.

“One of the things that we always preach to our kids and our staff is if you hear something or see something say something and this is what happened to at least one of our students they reported it to the right people at the school and the school went into action,” Simeroth said.

The school went into a soft lockdown closing all entrances. School resource officers reaching out to the Yukon Police Department. Yukon Police said the threat was a text message from a former student. That text mentioned the suspect bringing a handgun to the school and confronting students involved students.

“I don't care if it's on Snapchat, Facebook or whatever any kind of claims or pictures or anything like that we take it so seriously that you'll be arrested if it happens,” Simeroth said.

Yukon Police did just that. They found Ethan Lowe on South Yukon Parkway right in front of the school entrance. Police said he was taken into custody. He did not have a gun, but he was armed with a knife.

Yukon Superintendent Simeroth said it all happened in about five minutes. He said by the time he got to the school Ethan Lowe was in handcuffs.

Simeroth describes the response as quick and professional.

“Instruction went on as normal the only thing that was outside there was some flashing lights,” Simeroth said.

Yukon Police transported Lowe to the Canadian County jail on district charges.

“In the past few years, we've been involved with OSBI in tracking down various things, and we will continue to do so,” Simeroth said.

Lowe was arrested on complaints of threatening to Perform a Violent Act, Possession of Weapon on School Grounds, and Trespassing.
