Thousands of students across the metro experienced their first day of school Thursday, including those attending James Monroe Elementary School.

News 9 was there as they entered the halls for their first day back.

The first day of school can be a rough morning for elementary school students. Some tears were shed, but there were also plenty of smiles.

Students will be learning math, science and of course, sharing some of their summer adventures.

With tears in her eyes, parent Bri Borcuk said she sent her kids off with a positive message.

“’Be the greatest that they can be,’” Borcuk said. “’Have a blessed day, and that grandma and I love them.’”

Another parent Megan Stevens said she had mixed emotions.

"It's like, an anxiety type of weird because you are so used to him being home in the summer, and then you're like, ‘Now what am I going to do all day?’" Stevens said.

Oklahoma City Public Schools said it is providing all students with breakfast and lunch all year long in an effort to make sure they are ready to learn.

The effort is made possible by implementing the Community Eligibility Program.
