An OKC metro mom branched out and started a business to help other parents get the best of both worlds: spending time with kids and getting work done.

Paige Mitchell said she has always had a gift for working with children.

"I have been in childcare since I was about 15," Mitchell said.

When she had two of her own, Mitchell was searching for a work-life balance.

"I was doing freelance graphic design, and I was trying to build websites, and at the same time, I would babysit and (sic) with my kids,” Mitchell said.

Mitchell realized how difficult it was to balance both being a mom and working, so she had an idea.

"I was talking with my mom one night, and we thought about how something like this would solve my problems and parents trying to work from home,” Mitchell said.

“Recess” was born.

"We’re a co-working space with on-site childcare, and we provide private workspaces and flexible childcare options,” Mitchell said.

“Recess” is located in downtown Oklahoma City and is one of the businesses featured on the Oklahoma City Innovation District’s entrepreneurship asset map.

The district said the city is becoming a hot spot for start-ups due to the city’s low cost of living, location and lower taxes.

"The Oklahoma City Innovation District, along with other key entrepreneurial-focused organizations across the city, are working together to promote OKC as an emerging top-tier entrepreneurship ecosystem where startups can thrive,” OKC Innovation District president and chief executive officer Katy Evans Boren said.

According to the district's website, the asset map is a network of approximately 60 services and/or resources provided by approximately 40 organizations across two similar industries.

The map will only continue to grow as data is entered by the professionals working daily in these industries.

"At the end of the day when a new mom comes in and says, ‘I got so much work done today,’” Mitchell said. “I am so glad. That means our mission is accomplished."

Recess is open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday.
