With Tax Day fast approaching, the Oklahoma Department of Wildlife Conservation has a way that you can help them.

The wildlife department manages Oklahoma's wildlife resources by protecting homes to important species and with wildlife diversity programs focused on non-game species.

They don't receive any Oklahoma tax revenue, but can accept donations from tax refunds through the Oklahoma Resident Income Tax Return Schedule 511-H.

This money will go towards the Wildlife Diversity Fund.

The first step in conservation for biologists is getting a handle on where the animals can be found and how many can be found there.

"That is really pretty basic information, but when it comes to species that aren't hunted or fished, it can be a bit of a mystery," Jena Donnell with the Oklahoma Wildlife Conservation Department said. "They might be rare; they might be declining. A lot of times, they're really secretive."

Finding the species and figuring out what habitat they need means the wildlife department can protect them.

Donnell said when you make a donation to the wildlife diversity program, you become an active part of conservation and are helping biologists get information to help conserve species native to Oklahoma.
