At least one school district will have to extend its school year because of the winter storms this week.

Schools across the state canceled classes this week, others went virtual.

Edmond Public Schools will extend their school year by two days to make up for lost instruction time.

District spokespeople told News 9 they decided to take extra snow days due to a number of factors. They said poor attendance during previous remote learning was the most significant. The district was also worried about ice on Wednesday leading to possible power outages similar to what we experienced last February, which made remote learning difficult and frustrating for both parents and students.”

El Reno Public Schools also took a snow day this week due to concerns about conditions.

“With the experts on Tuesday not really sue on timelines and what level of precipitation we were going to get, it made it really difficult for us to anything except for snow days,” said El Reno Public Schools Superintendent Craig McVay

McVay says transportation and connectivity were key concerns. They also keep in mind the kids they keep fed.

“We feed about 4,000 meals a day and if we go remote or virtual, we can open our cafeterias and let people come do that. when we go with a straight snow day that’s not available,” McVay said.

The district sent hundreds of backpacks full of food home with students before the schools closed, in partnership with the regional food bank.

Here’s a look at where other districts are at with available snow days:

Moore, Norman, and Mid Del all have one non-instructional day left.

OKCPS has three snow days left.

Piedmont, El Reno, Mustang and Millwood also have days left and do not plan to extend their calendar at this point.
