Due to the spike in COVID-19 cases, five more Oklahoma City schools are shifting to virtual learning on Tuesday.

On Monday, 23 teachers at Capitol Hill High School tested positive and the school only had one substitute to fill in.

This caused no other alternative but to go virtual.

OKCPS Superintendent Dr. Sean McDaniel said the district has now canceled in-person learning for nine schools.

"We can't find adults to provide or come in and be substitutes for us. We get into this slippery slope of safety and welfare," said McDaniel.

The newest to be added to the list of schools starting online classes include Capitol Hill High School, Putnam Heights Academy, Webster Middle school along with Van Buren and Fillmore Elementary.

Those students will be learning virtually until at least next Tuesday, January 18th.

On Monday alone, the superintendent said more than 120 students and staff tested positive for COVID-19.

Dr. Sean McDaniel said the district is considering changing its quarantine policy.

Right now, anyone who is considered a close contact to someone with COVID-19 is required to stay home.

McDaniel said that requirement could soon turn to a recommendation only.
